IITians are NERDS !?!

It was a double holiday, one for the simple reason that it was Sunday and the other being Ganesh Chaturthi, which is also a holiday. I was online in the afternoon and I met one of my junior, Senthil (http://www.ayearafter.blogspot.com/) , on a gmail chat. He happened to ask me

"Where are u?

I was in the lab doing some project work and I replied humbly...

"In the lab"

his next expression was a smiley :) . I thought somethings wrong and I happened to ask him whats so strange that you are smiling. He replied, that theres a topic published in todays newspaper - Times of India, saying that a study has been conducted, which says that IITians are NERDS.

Nerd at Dictionary.com means 'an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit'. I returned home after this episode and read the newspaper. It was a democratic study, in the sense that it was by the IITians, for the IITians and also the world, and of the IITians. The study said that the Students admitted, are very less enthusiastic and are more into studies leaving cultural events and extra curricular activities. This study was conducted by interviewing around 550 IITians, mostly from the first and the second year.

Thank God that it doesn't hold true for the Research Associates. I have been staying in IIT for almost 2 months now and what I feel is something very different. Seeing it in a different perspective, What I found at IIT is that few people are really active at least in our Hostel, Tansa. Tansa is a hostel for staffs (Research Associates) and hence they are very active as they don't have much to study unlike the students of IIT. At Tansa, there are all sorts of celeberations and other activities taking place from time to time. Picnics, Ganesh Mandals, Holi, Independence Day to Garden maintenence, every thing and we see people actively participating in it. We (me and Yogesh) don't get time though for all that. But its nice to see them work and enjoy. They also came up with a bi-monthly magazine, reflecting their image of being active, which is appreciable.

This was about Tansa, Talking about some students hostel, Hostel - 4, which is adjacent hostel. Our hostel room window is parallel to the common room of Hostel 4 where the junior students of IIT reside. And believe me when we come back from our labs at night, we can hear some live performances, Some singing 'Dooba Dooba rehta hoon' and playing guitar and some singing Summer of 69 - by Bryan Adams. Its actually great to listen to them. As the common room is quiet close to our rooms window its really great to hear them perfom LIVE. Amazing guitar playing and singing ability they posses. Once we were returning and from somewhere accross the IIT ground we heard some real live music. We were stunned to hear that, coz it was never heard before. It was an amazing number though I forgot the tune.

We can see people jogging in the evenings, coz we are never up in the morning to see them. Sports is also very common amongst youngsters. I have seen people going to badminton court late night.

Its actually a treat to watch these Young Guns of India to perform, Let it be Mood Indigo (mood-i) or Techfest. They are born to perform...
