For GIS career at SIG

Hi all,

I keep getting queries about SIG (Symbiosis Institute of Technology), should people take admissions or not ???

Here are answers to few Questions...

Q1. I want to join SIG what are its prospects.
My Answer. The prospects are good, but purely depends on the individuals interest.

Q2. What is the package that is offered after passing out from SIG?
My Answer. It depends, normally it is from 2Lacs p.a. to 4.5 lacs p.a.

Q3. What is the mix of students normally taking admission for this course.
My Answer. There is a good mix of student from varied fields from Agriculture to forestry, Computers, Civil, Mechanical, IT, BCom, MA, and many such different people...

Q4. What are the basic requirements for the course?
My Answer. I would recommend people to have a good knowledge of programming as it is a part of the course and finally u have to work on that irrespective of the field you are from.

Q5. What languages are taught at SIG.
My Answer. Java, SQL, C#, VB are few of them that are taught.

Q6. What are the GIS/Image Processing tools that are taught in the course?
My Answer. ArcGIS, Erdas, GeoMedia, Geomatica, ILWIS Leica Photogrammetry Suite etc...

Q7. I have done BCom is the course recommended to me ?
My Answer. Again it purely depends on individuals interest, if you are interested go ahead.

Q8. Is it a purely technical course.
My Answer. Yes it is a purely technical course. where few engineering concepts, surveying techniques are also taught.

Q9. I have done BCom and got a call from a good Business School, where should i go, SIG or MBA?
My Answer. Thats a tough one still, it depends on you. if u are interested to take the challenge to go SIG, if you want to come to GIS field as a manager go for MBA. MBA is recommended by me as it is more relevant to BCom and you can join in as GIS manager later.

Q10. What are the questions asked during GD/PI?
My Answer. In GD the question/topic could be anything and you have to talk on that topic sensibly. whereas in PI they normally ask about ur knowledge in GIS, basics, its applications in various fields, I would recommend you to read a few case studies on GIS in Disaster management, GIS in agriculture/ urban planning / crop yeild / rural development and so on.
